A new Small Lot Pig Producer Program has been unveiled to provide valuable guidance for small lot pork producers in B.C..

Development of the program, featured in a newly released manual titled "Small Lot Pork Producer Management & Production," was led by Prairie Swine Health Services.

“Prairie Swine Health Services was contracted in 2019 by B.C Pork to develop a Small Lot Pig Producer Program," says Dr. Kelsey Gray of Prairie Swine Health Services. "In B.C, there are over 1200 registered small scale producers and this number is growing rapidly in B.C and in other provinces. Small scale pig producers are part of our national herd and engaging with them is key for national success. We are very pleased to have the final manual published! The next phase of the program will be hosting seminars in B.C for the targeted audience. Stay tuned for more information.”

Strong industry and government support

Funding was provided in part by the B.C. Pork, through the Hog Industry Development Fund and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector, ensuring continued innovation, growth and prosperity.

Prairie Swine Health Services led the development of the program and related manual, with contributions from many subject matter experts who reviewed and contributed material along with many resources referenced.
